Interior Painting and Drywall in Huber Heights, OH

Kitchen with cream painted cabinets, an island and granite counters

Huber Heights is a city of houses. The US Census counts 79.8% of its homes as single-family detached, a higher share than Dayton, Kettering, Beavercreek, Fairborn or Riverside, and 70.9% as owner-occupied. Most of them are single-family homes from the 1960s-1990s. The median home was built in 1976, 61.9% were built before 1980, and only 2% before 1950.

That last number matters for the walls. The National Park Service dates plaster as the wall surface of nearly all buildings until the 1930s or 40s, and drywall took over after. With only 2% of homes from before 1950, a Huber Heights house almost always has drywall throughout, walls and ceilings. A typical house here is about 50 years old, and in homes of that age the original builder's work starts to show its years:

  • Nail pops in ceilings and walls.
  • Cracked seams over doors and windows and where the ceiling meets the wall.
  • Builder-grade flat paint that marks easily and does not wash.
  • Popcorn ceilings, popular in homes of that era.
  • Unfinished basements waiting to become rooms.

Each of those has a page of its own on this site, linked below. If that list sounds like your house, it is time to say goodbye to dents, holes, and outdated textures, one room or the whole house.

Nail Pops and Seam Cracks in Huber Heights Homes

A nail pop is a small round bump, or a ring-shaped crack, over a fastener in the drywall. Much of the drywall hung in that era was nailed. The framing lumber behind it dries and shrinks over the years, the board moves, and the nail head works its way out through the paint. You see it most on ceilings, in a line along a joist.

The repair is specific. A drywall screw goes in beside the popped nail to pull the board tight to the framing. The old nail is driven back in or pulled. Both are covered with compound in thin coats, feathered out, sanded, primed and painted. Covering a pop with compound alone, without pulling the board tight, only lasts until the board moves again.

Seam cracks have a pattern too. Cracks running up from the corners of doors and windows come from a house's normal movement at its weakest points. A crack along the line where the ceiling meets an outside wall, one that opens in winter and closes in summer, often points to roof trusses lifting with the seasons. Ohio weather drives that movement: NOAA counts 109.9 days a year with a low at or below freezing at Dayton International Airport, so the house is closed and heated half the year, then summers bring humid air and 11.05 inches of rain in June through August. Wood framing takes on moisture and gives it up again as the seasons turn. We look at where and when a crack shows before we decide how to fix it. Our drywall repair page goes through patches and cracks in more detail.

Repainting Over Builder-Grade Flat Paint

Many houses from those building years still have the paint they were sold with, or a later coat of the same kind: flat, pale and thin. Flat paint hides small flaws, which is why builders used it, but it scuffs, marks and does not stand up to washing. In a hallway, a kitchen or a child's room it looks tired quickly.

Repainting starts with the walls, not the paint. Walls are washed where hands and furniture touch them, nail holes and dents filled, patches sanded and spot-primed so they do not show through. Then the order is ceilings first, walls next, trim and doors last, so roller spatter from above never lands on a finished wall. That is how we get sharp lines, smooth coats, and premium finishes.

Sheen is the biggest change from builder paint. Flat stays right for most ceilings. Eggshell or satin on walls wipes clean in halls, kitchens and kids' rooms. Semi-gloss on trim and doors takes the most wear. Paint also needs the right conditions: with the windows closed for the heating season, or with humid summer air inside, we follow the temperature and airflow the can's label asks for, so each coat dries properly before the next. Read more on our interior painting page. If your kitchen still has its original wood cabinets, our cabinet painting page explains the prep that paint on them takes.

Popcorn Ceilings and Basements

Popcorn ceilings were popular in homes of that era, and many houses from those years still have them. They catch dust and cobwebs, they are hard to patch so a repair blends in, and they make a room look its age. EPA lists "Textured paint and patching compounds used on walls and ceilings" among the places asbestos may be found, so read our popcorn ceiling removal page before anyone scrapes one.

If your house has a basement, it is often the biggest room left to finish. Our part there is the drywall on the walls and ceiling, the taping and finishing, and the paint, after the framing, electrical and plumbing are done by those trades and inspected. Permits and inspections come from the building department that covers your address. The basement finishing page explains the order of the work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions We Hear a Lot

Kitchen sink wall before and after: oak cabinets, then painted sage green
  • Yes. AMR Home Services is based in Dayton, Ohio, and we serve Huber Heights for interior painting, drywall installation and repair, cabinet painting, popcorn ceiling removal and basement drywall and paint. Call or text (937) 829-8873 for a free estimate.

  • Those are usually nail pops. Much of the drywall hung in homes of that era was nailed, and as the framing lumber dries and shrinks, the board moves and the nail head pushes out through the paint. The fix is a screw beside the nail to pull the board tight, then compound, sanding, primer and paint.

  • A crack along the ceiling line that opens in winter and closes in summer often points to roof trusses moving with the seasons, as the attic and the heated rooms below dry out and take on moisture at different rates. The right repair depends on the cause, so the pattern of the crack comes first.

  • Flat on most ceilings, because it hides small flaws. Eggshell or satin on walls in halls, kitchens and kids' rooms, because it wipes clean. Semi-gloss on trim and doors, which take the most wear. Flat paint on walls, as many builders left it, is the hardest to keep clean.

  • It depends on the room, so we price it after seeing it at a free estimate. What decides it: the size of the walls and ceiling, how much repair the drywall needs first, how many colors and sheens, and whether trim, doors and ceilings are included.
